A genuine community effort with Habitat for Humanity helping to bring the benefits of solar to low-income communities in the Mt. Burdell Place project. Normally solar would be out of reach for these residents due to installed cost barriers or qualifications of some assistance programs.
More than 100 volunteers stepped in to make this happen at no cost to future homeowners, being led Grid Alternatives Bay Area, an Oakland-based nonprofit.
Louisa Padilla, of Oakland, was one of the volunteers to help with installation efforts. The 39-year-old recently had eight solar panels installed at her house at no cost with help from Grid Alternatives. Novato’s Habitat for Humanity housing goes solar

The community pride in the project was evident. The environmental benefits for Novato and the utility savings for the homeowners will be long lasting. A real win-win-win outcome for all.
